I used to be this person that can’t listen to music while reading. I tend to sing along with the song currently playing leaving the book I’m reading unattended, and in worst case, I’ll put the book down and belt my lungs out. I’m a frustrated singer what can I say. I can be easily distracted that’s why I find nighttime to be most ideal time to read. It’s quiet and I can concentrate on what I’m reading.

But recently, I finally managed to conquer this little obstacle. I can now listen to music while reading. I heard some readers like plugging their earphones and blast the music (just like my sister) tuning out the noise. This logic didn’t make sense to me when I heard this reason. Isn’t the music can be distracting? It turns out it does help out tune out the noise. I finally saw the logic there. And if the playlist is in shuffle it’ll help me as well, since I don’t know what song will play next, it helps me not to get distracted. After a while, I tend to forget the music and just focus on reading. It’s not that I’m completely ignoring what I’m listening, I don’t know, but for some reason, the music and its beat keep me out from zoning, which sometimes happen when the story becomes too boring.

Above: My current reading pile. Below: Songs came from these albums.

I think it also contributed on what songs I’m currently listening. As you can see I’m listening to Japanese music—again. Watching anime brought back so many interests and this is included. It’s not that I can’t sing along with it anymore (I still can…just with slight accent now, much to my dismay) but Japanese songs have this beautiful arrangement and they have unique style. I just adore it, listening to their music comes in hand in hand since songs are heavily featured in animes that I watched.

I also liked keeping tabs on what I’m currently listening, it’s why I signed up a last.fm account (and if you have one, kindly add me <– shameless plugging, I know. I’m chocodenim there. :P) Before my stats wasn’t that accurate but I installed a last.fm app on my phone so every time I listen it scrobbles the songs (even if I’m offline, I think it will update once I gain internet access. Or so I thought.). It’s very handy for someone like me who likes to record things, haha.

But going back to the topic, I’m immensely happy that I seized this obstacle. I’m not the best person or the most comfortable in multitasking. But for me to achieve this is a big deal, I don’t need to listen and read separately. I can do it at the same time!

Do you also listen while reading? What’s in your playlist right now? Would you like to share it with me?

ONE PIECE <3. I still can't listen to music while I'm reading, unless I'm reading graphic novels. I'm okay with background noise like cars honking outside or people talking next to me, but for some reason, music distracts me a lot! I'm glad you're better at multitasking now, and I hope I'll be able to do the same, heehee. Right now, I'm super addicted to G-Dragon's "Who You?" :)

I finally found love with reading (especially manga) while listening to music. It distracts me at first, too but somehow finally got to concentrate on both. I love multitasking! xD

      Yes, One Piece is <3!!!!

  2. Hmmmmm I don’t know if I could listen to music while reading… maybe I actually need to try it? I think if I were to try, I’d have to take baby steps; maybe try instrumental music first! I know a couple good instrumental songs from Nightwish and God Is An Astronaut, haha! This makes me want to find a bunch on instrumental songs and try reading XD I think I might do that now.
By the way, I added you on last.fm! I love checking out what other people are listening to!

Try it! It might getting used to but I finally see the benefit. Instrumental is good start since there’s only music there and it’s not gonna be a distracting as songs with lyrics. :)

  3. I hardly ever listen to music while reading (I read more slowly when I do) but I almost always listen to music while writing anything. It helps to have a beat to type along to. But if I do listen to music while reading, it definitely helps to have music that fits the tone of the book, which is why just plain shuffle doesn’t always work for me.

  4. I actually love listening to music while reading!! :P But hey, soul sister, at least we’re on the same level about that now ;D So when I’m reading with my headphones on, I’m probably bobbing around on the spot! It’s pretty fun, and it helps me with my reading (especially if I’m reading a book I don’t really like xD)!
I normally read on the bus too on the way home (the only free time I have to read most of the time D:) and so I listen to music too, and bib bob around (yes I think some people may be staring at me too xD)
    Lovely post, Mitchii!! ^^ <3

    • And seriously, because of you, I might be considering picking up some manga or watching some anime!! You added a whole lot of stuff I want to do right now!! (NOOOOO) :P

      DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!! xD

I can’t read while on commute, that’s one obstacle I will never gonna conquer. Haha, sometimes I’m unaware that I bob my head, only to realize people are starting at me, surprised. LOL

  5. You’re lucky you can listen to music while reading! I’ve tried it a couple of times and nope, just can’t do it. I just get distracted and end up listening to the song instead of reading. Not even soundtracks for movies or shows. I’m so ashamed, because I love books and music A LOT. :( Anyway, I’ve been wondering if I should create a last.fm account as well, but my Spotify is doing fine for me!

As for what’s on my playlist right now… I’m listening to the Shingeki soundtrack. LOVE. Vogel Im Kafig makes me tear up every time, and the old ending song, This Beautiful Cruel World, makes me want to sing my heart out while crying at the same time. As you can see, I am majorly obsessed with the anime, thanks to you ;D

And ooh, I see you’re reading One Piece! I keep seeing it popping up on the anime site I’m watching my shows on, and it looks pretty interesting. How is it so far?

I just recently got the hang of it. I can’t listen to music while reading before so this makes me super happy. I know spotify but I still like last.fm better and been there since 2009.

Eeep, SnK OST is the best. I love the songs there. It’s so hunting emotional! >.<

I loved One Piece, it's one of my all time favorites. I took a 2 years break so I'm doing a lot of catching up but so far I love the new arcs. So interesting. XD

  7. YAY! You have One Piece! That was totally the first thing I thought when I read your post. I looove One Piece and it makes me so happy to see someone else (and a book blogger at that) reading it, too! In any case, music and I have long gotten over our “obstacle”. I used to find it so distracting, but now I live in a place where there are worse noises and they help me read and do stuff now. I’m glad to see you’re the same :D AND YES ONE PIECE

I loved One Piece & I’m huge anime and manga fan so there’s that. ;D I’m incredibly happy that you are a fan, too. It was distracting at first but with all the noise surrounds me, music dulls it and helps me concentrate.

  8. Alice says:

I can only listen to classical while I’m reading, so I tend to just go find a quiet spot free from any distraction. I think it’s great you’ve managed to just relax into it though, it certainly is a good way to drown out the outside world.

    • Mitchii G. says:

I’m glad you’re enjoying classical music, I one of those people that still haven’t appreciate the classics, much to my parent’s dismay. :P

  9. I can’t listen to music when I’m reading. It really distracts me because all the music I have are songs that I love to sing. But if you can do it, I think I can too. Maybe I’d have to listen to piano only though. Or just songs that I don’t know the words to. :D

  10. I can’t listen to any sort of music while reading or else I’ll get distracted and end up missing entire chunks of books, haha! I don’t know why, but when I study, I study BETTER with music.. ._. Hopefully one day I can listen to music while reading. ;)

    • Mitchii G. says:

Hey, if you can study while listening then there’s a chance that you can do it while reading. I hope you’ll give it a try.

  11. Nikki @ The Paper Sea says:

I keep giving music a try while I’m reading but I always get too distracted by the lyrics. I have a better job with classical or instrumental music, but I do prefer reading with just normal, everyday ambience in the background. I wish I could listen to music while I read; it would help when I’m trying to read in a busy place!

  12. Whether or not I listen to music really depends on what mood I am in. Sometimes I can pop in a CD (am I the only one who uses CDs any more? HAHA), and read a book and not be distracted by the lyrics, but then other times all I can hear is the song and the book fades away.

I don’t know what is different in each of the scenarios, I am guessing its actually kind of random.

However, if it is a score, I can listen to it ALWAYS. Because there are no words I don’t feel like it gets in the way of me concentrating on the book – which is great.

As for my playlist, I have been pretty much listening to Ed Sheeran’s new album X non-stop since it released. It’s fantastic, and I highly recommend it ;D
