When your yearly special official post title doesn’t resonate your status due to your ongoing predicament; therefore you have no choice but to make teeny bit of adjustment. And so, what I called best of the best doesn’t reflect what I feel right now. Sadly that bookish slump hit me pretty bad. It’s not the lack of trying (OK so maybe a bit of that, I admit) but I found some of my reads for this year on the mediocre side. It’s pretty much hypocritical to call them best if I deemed them not in reality. So some may not be the cherriest of my picks but they do deserve some spotlight! Here are my fave picks from this mix!!!

Brand Spanking New (Debut/Standalone/Starter Novel)

  • Vendetta (Blood for Blood, #1) by Doyle, Catherine – the only 4 stars I bestowed upon. So yeah, no brainer there!

Next in Line (Sequel/Part of a Series)

  • Tokyo Ghoul:re ((東京喰種:re) by Sui Ishida – Mitchii, stop with Tokyo Ghoul already! No, NOPE! And honestly this is a sequel and my favorite of them all so yeah it fits the mold perfectly (as Pinoys will say “pasok sa banga!”). I love the sequel better than original series & that itself made it astounding.

Eye Candy (Best Cover!)

  • Made You Up by Francesca Zappia – I maybe on the fence  on you book but hells yeah you’re one amazing number! I like how playful, busy the art is!

Shipper’s Award (Best Couple)

Fushimi, Rin & Kusunoki, Komugi (Watashi no Ookami-kun (私のオオカミくん) by Nogiri, Youko – I should not ship them because the guy isn’t the main character. But ask the majority of the readers and they will tell you why Rin captured our hearts despite him being the secondary character. A ship that is fated to sink but who cares! As a hard shipper will say: I WILL GO DOWN WITH THIS SHIP!

Indie-mand (Self-Published Novel)

  • The Deal (Off-Campus #1) by Elle Kennedy – it was fun read, nothing groundbreaking but I enjoyed it.

The RE-invent! (Retellings, Mythology/Folklore inspired, etc.)

  • The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1) by Ahdieh, Renee – I said before how much I love Thousand & One Night so yeah. It didn’t live up to my expectation but let’s give credit where the credit due.

Larger than life! (Best Contemporary Book)

  • Immaculate by Katelyn Detweiler – In retrospect what made this book genius is it tackled faith in very restrained manner. The lack of real answer probed me to think further. Amazingly clever!
  • Emmy & Oliver by Benway, Robin – When even until I remember the story oh so clearly it means I really enjoyed it. Plus it was the easiest review I’ve written. Words just poured in!

Re-wind! (Historical/Fantasy)

  • Song of the Long March (長歌行) by Xia Da – If there’s one thing that this series excels is the evident and natural progression of each plot elements. Astounding!

Trailblazers (Hero + Heroine):

  • Urie Kuki, Shurazu Ginshi, Mutsuki Tooru, & Saiko Yonebayashi (Tokyo Ghoul:re by Sui Ishida) – the baby quinxs deserve the spotlight expcially after what happened to chapter 55! *ugly sobbing* But they’re definitely the most memorable new characters I have the pleasure of investing my sincere and overflowing emotions. Again chapter 50 freaking 5! *loud ugly sobbing*

And there you have it~ I didn’t have a lot to choose from (at least book wise). But it’s a tradition here already, I’m not about to break it, haha. But how about you? Which are your top picks of this year??!! Do tell me maybe I might need your selection! ;D

Haven’t read the majority of them haha >< But I'm currently struggling through The Wrath and the Dawn… I agree that it's a different kind of retelling but there are so many things about the book that don't click with me… I'm actually tempted to DNF it ;(

    • Mitchii G. says:

I didn’t like The Wrath and the Dawn that much (I had problem with the MC & the romance) but I think some stuff were quite clever. I hope somehow the book will redeem itself but if you’re not liking it then just DNF, I guess. T^T
