Hey guys! If you’re one massive bookworm and you know that owning bookshelves (yes, plural, I used the word ‘massive’ and that indicates something grandeur) is a must. There are people who are organized and there’s anal retentive like me who organized it in so many aspects (which sometimes doesn’t make sense. Right sis?). Every time I tell my sister that I’ll organize the shelves, she will groan and adamantly tell me not to (there was one time I removed everything and didn’t know how to arrange anymore so she ended arranging it herself. But I did re-organize behind her back when one time she went to the grocery. I was laughing evilly at the background.).

I only do minor tweaking now. Like, if I think this book looks out of place I move it to a group which I think it belongs to (much to my sister dismay). So how do I shelve the books? So many freaking ways! *evil laughs*

How do you arrange your bookshelves?

From left to right: (1) by height and thickness (2) by color scheme (3) by series (4) by edition

1. by height and thickness

You already had read it here. It makes me super happy if by some miracle they are the same width and height. I really like seeing them on the shelves because they look so neat! Makes my eyes twinkling with joy because of the symmetry!!! *twirls*

2. by color scheme

My books are scattered rainbow colors that makes me pout. One time we decided to arrange them by colors while it looks neat (ROYGBIV~!), I didn’t like it at all.

3. by series

This is the most sensible arrangement to me. I mean, why separate a book of the same series? I just don’t get it so by default they should be standing next to each other.

For mangas: They are so easy, not only do they have perfect, uniformed spines. They are even in both thicknesses and heights (except the omnibus but put them together they actually do).

4. sometimes by edition:

UK Edition books have a space of their own. And since we are in the topic of this edition, why are they always smaller than US? *cringes whenever I see my copy of Captivate but I didn’t want to buy another copy again*

How about you, how do you arrange your books? Are you like me confusing freak but hiding behind the label organized-but-not-really? Share it with me (and maybe I’ll apply it myself).

* PS: I just couldn’t resist using Gintama’s awesome title. Only this manga can get away with it!

  1. I used to arrange my books alphabetically on author names, but I’ve run out of space and I’m just stuffing books everywhere I can, haha. I have them scattered all around my room, my boyfriends apartment and on the shelves from my book wall. I can’t wait to get a house where I can fit them all on new shelves :D

I love the look from arranging on colors, but it would drive me crazy to take series apart!

Our home is too small to leave them scattered so I need to arrange and stuff them in the shelves after buying them. I got rid of the books I don’t like anymore so that’s the reason I still a few more spaces (that will also run out soon).

It’s looks good and horrible at the same time. Height and series are everywhere, I really didn’t like it. :P

  2. This is awesome! One day, I hope to have enough books to do this with my shelves. Since right now, it’s only height and author’s names, it’s a massive jumble of colours. Being able to have series and editions and thickness into it all would be so cool. Your bookshelves look absolutely amazing!

Thanks Laura. I remember when the shelves looked so empty when we just recently moved in to our unit. It just grew after years of buying, I also get rid some books that I don’t like anymore to save spaces to the ones I really loved. :)

When I first bought my bookshelf, I was going to arrange my books according to height and MAYBE color, because I’d seen pictures (like yours!) of amazingly organized bookshelves and I’d be like, “Oh my gaaawd, I must be like that!” But then as the books started rolling in too quickly, I got lazy and just started arranging them by series. In no particular arrangement. I don’t care if the books are alphabetically messed up, or if they don’t have the same heights — just as long as they’re together as a series, it’s all good. :D Also, I have a bad habit of getting the first book of the series and not getting the sequel(s), so I don’t really have that many series to arrange, haha. And besides, I just filled up my bookshelf to the brim, so like Mel, I’m just looking for any space I can slot new books in, lol.

Haha, I know the feeling. I’m actually running out space. Like there’s only few spaces available. It is why I like getting eARCS not only do they save me buying books that I might not like but also save me some space. I really like to keep books that I really loved. :D
